Mathematics
Vision
We believe that every child can learn mathematics, given the appropriate learning experiences within and beyond the classroom. Our curriculum map reflects our high expectations for every child.
We believe that it is essential for students to develop mathematical thinking in and out of the classroom to fully master mathematical concepts. Our practice embeds the importance of deep understanding.
We believe that pupils should be encouraged to use mathematical language throughout their maths learning to deepen their understanding of concepts.
We also aim to ensure our pupils gain a love and appreciation for all the mathematics around them and will fully enjoy mathematics.
Key Stage 3
We sequence concepts and methods so that previously learnt ideas can be connected to new learning, supporting students in understanding the coherent and connected nature of the subject, and ensuring they consolidate learning by continually using and applying it in a variety of contexts. The National Curriculum is followed, to ensure a breadth of knowledge. The Mastery approach is followed throughout Key Stage 3, to develop deeper understanding and embed key concepts. Conceptual Understanding, Language and Communication and Mathematical Thinking are embedded into our curriculum resources.
We believe that all of mathematics can be appreciated more fully once a student has a deep appreciation of the number system, therefore, we put number sense and place value first to ensure that all understanding builds on these foundations. Teachers use retrieval practice and reviews of prior learning to ensure that students embed key concepts in their long-term memory and apply them fluently. Regular low stakes testing, formative assessment and more formal tests are used to identify any gaps in knowledge; interventions are then provided as appropriate.
