Business Studies
Vision
Colchester’s Academy vision is to nurture students, offering all a learning experience and curriculum that is broad, balanced and relevant. We believe that it should engage and challenge students, enable each of them to fulfil their individual potential and equip them with the requisite knowledge, vocabulary, and cognitive skills required in an ever-changing and increasingly demanding world.
The curriculum is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of business skills and practical education that focuses on equipping students with a full range of transferable skills such as communication, problem solving, research, presenting, and project management.
Business students quickly learn to relate their subject knowledge to real life experiences and to use creative and critical thinking, analysis, and evaluation to understand some of the business and marketing decisions we observe in our local, national, and international markets. This will prepare learners to develop independence and confidence in using these skills for further study of qualifications in the enterprise, marketing or business sector.
Our curriculum is planned and sequenced to ensure our students are progressing year on year and getting the flavour of topics in GCSE as they progress through to :
- utilises Rosenhine’s Principles of Instruction through our teaching pedagogy.
- use and application of key vocabulary in each topic.
- use retrieval practice to build upon prior knowledge and develop students' long term memory.
- use questioning and modelling to extensively teach new concepts and develop cognitive skills.
- Scaffolding will be used to support students on complicated tasks, coupling with stretch and challenges as they develop confidence in every lesson.
- Coursework units promote independent learning, self motivation and organisation.
- Use opportunities throughout KS3 and 4 to develop their extended writing skills.
Key Stage 4
All students will study the compulsory units of:
- R067 Enterprise and Marketing Concepts
- R068 Designing a Business Proposal
- R069 Market and Pitch a Business Proposal
Students will acquire a broad range of business and entrepreneurship skills and knowledge to prepare students for the world of work and further study through the curriculum focusing on these three units above. Creativity and independent learning will be encouraged. Students will be given time to explore a range of businesses and organisations and how they have developed products and marketing strategies.
