Accessing Books at Home
Due to current restrictions and limitations, we appreciate that access to books can be a challenge at the moment. We have a number of sources and suggestions that may help you.
Encourage your child to log on to https://www.myon.co.uk/login/index.html We have subscribed to myON as a school which allows students to read and listen to a wide range of books, alongside completing projects and other activities. Students in Years 7 and 8 can also link myON directly to Accelerated Reader. This guides them to select books that are at the optimum level for them based on the STAR tests they take frequently. Linking myON to AR also allows them to take comprehension quizzes on the books they have read which is directly fed back to their class teacher.
To log in to myON, students should use their normal Google log in name and the password abc
The new Oak Academy has started a library which gives you access to one book a week, along with a range of activities. It can be accessed here: https://library.thenational.academy
Given the amount of screen time that has become a part of our every day life, we understand that reading can be tough to keep up with, especially ebooks. To counteract this, there are places you can access audio books. If you have a music subscription to Spotify, there are a number of classic books on there that you can listen to as part of your subscription.
You are currently able to join your local library online, free of charge. https://libraries.essex.gov.uk/facilities-and-charges/join-the-library/
You will be given a virtual library card and then can access e-books, e-audiobooks, e-comics, e-magazines and e-newspapers.
Please remember to share reviews and recommendations of the reading you are doing. You can do this in one of three ways: via email to studentwork@colchesteracademy.org.uk , directly on myON when you finish a book or joining our fabulous The Bookworms! Classroom in Google Classroom.
